Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading producers in Barolo. His story is well known: after years of work as a cellarman he purchased his first vineyard on the Cannubi hill. Since their first harvest in 1978, Luciano and his brother Luca have devoted tremendous efforts towards cultivating the finest fruit in their vineyards, which now cover 63 acres in the best parts of Langa and Roero, and to taking extraordinary care in the cellar. Sandrone’s Barolos are sometimes described as straddling the modern and traditional styles in the region: elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate right from their first years in bottle, but with no less power and structure than traditional Barolos. Along with the extremely low yields in the vineyard, Sandrone has a very rational approach in the cellar. This approach, however, is also unique and outside of simple classification, as Sandrone subjects his wines to a relatively short maceration period, does not use rotary fermentors, and makes limited use of new oak in the maturation process, all signs of a traditional approach in the cellar. The new winery, built in 1998 at the foot of the steep Cannubi hillside in the heart of the Barolo district, is characterized by the respect for tradition and desire for innovation that also define Sandrone wines. “Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading lights in Piedmont. No grower has managed to so brilliantly reconcile modern and traditional approaches in making wines that are soft, supple and approachable when young, but also capable of aging beautifully.” Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, November 2007.

Tasting notes
Complex aromas of red cherry, blueberry and brown spices. Full-bodied and deep with harmonious acidity giving focus to the red cherry, camphor and mineral flavors. Smooth tannins stain the palate on the long, firm finish.

A rich, muscular structure cradles the cherry and strawberry fruit in this intense red. Tar and spice flavors add complexity as this turns tannic and impenetrable on the finish, with an undercurrent of racy acidity. Best from 2017 through 2038. 150 cases imported. –BS

Sandrone’s 2008 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of breathtaking textural finesse and elegance. Nothing really stands out, so phenomenal is the wine’s balance and sense of harmony. This is the kind of wine that is easy to overlook because it doesn’t ask for attention and isn’t showy. Instead, everything is simply in the right place. The finest, most silky of tannins support a core of sweet red berries, flowers, mint and spices, all of which are woven together with total refinement. The eternal, nuanced finish bodes very well for the future. This is a dazzling effort from Luciano and Luca Sandrone. Le Vigne is made from parcels in Vignane, Ceretta, Conterni and Merli. In 2008 there is a little less Vignane as part of the vineyard was hit by hail. There is little question that the blending of fruit from several sites was a huge advantage in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. ”

Technical notes
Produced from four specific cru-level sites – Ceretta di Perno, Conterni, Merli and Vignane. Each lot was vinified separately. After destemming and light crushing, the must is sealed with CO2 for gentle, warm maceration of approximately a day. Alcoholic fermentation begins about 24-36 hours later from native wild yeasts only. Gentle maceration in upright open-top steel tanks for the first 9-15 days of the alcoholic fermentation. The wine aged 24 months in 500 liter French oak casks followed by 18 months in bottle.
