I first tasted the Nossa Branco in Portugal at the homeof Filipa and her husband, William Wouters. He prepared a casual dinner of vegetable salads that we all shared, and the wine was extraordinarily fresh and delicious, just like the meal. It’s an intriguingly unexpected wine with lovely, perfumy aromas, and very cohesive flavors that reach in the direction of lemon-citrus, and creamy-peach with a some almond notes. There’s a hint of spice, yet softness across the palate and a long, elegant finish.

The Nossa Branco is an extraordinary example of Bical, a white grape native to winemaker Filipa’s home town in Bairrada. The wine’s style is simply explained by two phrases printed on the label: Vinhos Autênticos (authentic wines) and Sem Maquilhagem (without make-up). I find this position unique in the scope of Portuguese wines. She works exclusively with native grape varietals that are best suited for the terroir.

Food pairing

This is a wine to slow down for and to serve with foods that emphasize freshness, such as a crudo of Long Island fluke with spicy gremolata. Fruit, minerality, acidity and texture hold one another together in great balance, and it’s nicely polished all the way through to the finish. It tastes raw and alive but with a refined, feminine touch. When the raw ingredients are so good, they don’t need to be masked.
