In the property was a winery built in 1870 by the French when phylloxera forced them out of their vineyards in France (Jumilla is one of the few places in Spain that successfully resisted the infestation of phylloxera, hence making it an ideal place for this new winery). In 1985, the second generation of the family (Mr. Nemesio and his son Jose Mª Vicente) revived the property with the reconstruction of the vineyard and with the introduction of new varieties. In 1991 the wine cellar was reformed to preserve its origin

Wine Advocate 89 points (Dec 2012)
Made from 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre), Casa Castillo’s 2011 Monastrell comes from incredibly low yields (16 hectoliters per hectare). It reveals abundant flavor along with a chalky minerality, dense blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with a hint of spring flowers, medium body and a supple texture. This is an amazing red wine for such a lowly price.”
