The Zahel house in Mauer was built in 1766 by Maria Theresia and was originally used as an elementary school. Later, Mauer became incorporated into the city of Vienna. Although Vienna is only 20 kilometers wide, there are major differences in soil and climate throughout the various locations. Whereas Nußberg and Bisamberg are influenced by the Danube, Mauer is influenced by the continental climate of Eastern Europe.
Richard Zahel is the fourth generation of the Zahel family to tend vines in Mauer. His 2008 Riesling "Auf der Mauer" is made from 24 year old vines vinified in steel tanks to retain the freshness and flavor of the fruit. Bright yellow in color with a green shimmer, the bouquet is impressive with a mix of spice and fruit tones, with refreshing acidity on the finish. A delightful accompaniment to seafood and shellfish, and naturally good with Wiener schnitzel.
