Bodegas Y Vinedos Shaya Verdejo Shaya 2014

Bodegas Y Vinedos Shaya Verdejo Shaya 2014

750ML
Sku: 067221

This new project is a joint venture between Jorge Ordonez, Enrique Busto and the Gil family of Jumilla. One of the most impressive wines I have ever tasted from the region of Rueda, the fruit is sourced from very old low yielding vines whose average age is between 75 and 112 years old. Great nuances of fig, citrus and melon. This is like high class Sancerre for a fraction of the price.

Tasting notes
The wine that emerges is packed with aroma and lusciously full and creamy in the mouth, peach and mango with hints of vanilla and nutmeg from the oak, yet it’s still crisp and refreshing .

Rating
VM 90pts - Josh Reynolds:
"Juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors… Dry, focused white wine with clean finishing bite and lingering minerality.”
We’ve liked this one for years, as a refreshing sip all summer.

Wine maker notes
It displays a nose of toasty baking spices, nutmeg, spring flowers, marzipan, and pit fruits. A bit richer and more complex on the palate than the “regular” cuvee, this vibrant effort could evolve for 1-2 years but is drinking well now .

FOOD PAIRINGS
Seafood as stuffed mussels, oysters, shrimps, and scallops, fish, vegetables, rices and pasta

Technical notes
Producer information This project of the Gil Family, in partnership with Enrique Busto, started in 2008. The winery and its vineyards are located in the southeast of the D.O. Rueda, in the province of Segovia. Belinda Thomson, from the Australian Crawford River Winery, where some of the best white wines in Vitoria Valley are produced, is in charge of the technical direction. Grapes used to produce this wine come from the 30,5Ha of old Verdejo vineyards, with a low yield of 2,5 t/ha. The vines are planted in vaso system, in sandy soils, which makes possible that the vast majority of them are ungrafted. The vineyards have a surface layer of small river gravel and a deeper layer composed of clay. The wine is partially fermented in barrels and kept with all the lees for several months before being bottled

Review:
Very interesting coming from Spain, it has very similar favor profile of Sauvignon Blanc, but not just any given Sauvignon Blanc, this is very close to a Sancerre, with great citrus flavors and mineral profile.
