Palliser Estate Pinot Noir 2007

Palliser Estate Pinot Noir 2007

Winemaker Allan Johnson aims for a "ripe, full and rich" Pinot Noir. In recent years the wines have won many accolades. Most recently the 2000 vintage won the Winestate Pinot Noir of the year in 2002 and the 2001 vintage was awarded the only New Zealand gold medal at the 2003 London International Wine Challenge.

Good deep red with ruby highlights. Sexy perfume of cherry, raspberry, woodsmoke and underbrush; this reminded me a bit of a northern Rhone syrah. Then rich, chewy and dry on the palate, with a pliant texture but more saline soil tones showing today than sweet primary fruits. Finishes smoky and long, with good fat. (Incidentally, an earlier sample, with its notes of woodsmoke, violet and olive, was even more reminiscent of syrah. I would almost have guessed the bottle was mislabeled but this producer does not offer a syrah.)
