|I became acquainted with Quinta das Bageiras and their winemaker Mario Sergio this spring while in Bairrada, Portugal. In a recent conversation with winemaker Mario Sergio, he explained to me that Quinta das Bageiras is the outcome of the work of three generations, beginning with his grandfather, who selected the vineyard. Fogueira, the name of their village, means "log fire," (which is symbolized on each of their bottles). Their Baga wine is fermented in small cement tanks with the stems, using only indigenous yeasts, and aged in old wooden vats for about 16 months before being bottled without fining or filtration.
