Review
The Quinta das Bágeiras is such an honest, delicious and under-the-radar wine that I couldn’t overlook it, especially for its price. There is only one region in the world that grows Baga and that’s Bairrada, in Portugal. The best wines here, such as the Quinta das Bágeiras, come from old vines grown in chalk and limestone soils. This is producer Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno’s entry-level, easiest-drinking red, though he also makes a Garrafeira style that will knock your socks off.

Other text
I became acquainted with Quinta das Bageiras and their winemaker Mario Sergio this spring while in Bairrada, Portugal. In a recent conversation with winemaker Mario Sergio, he explained to me that Quinta das Bageiras is the outcome of the work of three generations, beginning with his grandfather, who selected the vineyard. Fogueira, the name of their village, means "log fire," (which is symbolized on each of their bottles). Their Baga wine is fermented in small cement tanks with the stems, using only indigenous yeasts, and aged in old wooden vats for about 16 months before being bottled without fining or filtration.

Food pairing
Made with 100 percent Baga, a traditional Portuguese grape, this wine is savory on the nose but with a rich palate of red cherries and plum. Thick tannins brush your mouth, yet at 13.5 percent alcohol, the Quinto das Bágeiras is still balanced and light enough to be called a summer red. The traditional pairing for this wine is roast suckling pig, but I like it BYOB alongside Peking duck and pork soup dumplings with soy-ginger sauce. With its tannins and bright acidity, it's versatile enough to work in the summertime with any meat off the grill.
