Review
I wanted to share not only a wonderful wine but also the story behind it of a man and his faithful three-legged companion. Also, I embrace the idea that a grape must tell the story of its native soil. A wine should tell you where it is from, and Three-Legged Red epitomizes some the best of what the Pacific Northwest wine region has to offer. It’s loaded with rich, supple aromas of fudge and nougat that play along perfectly with mulled cranberry, blackberry, currant, cassis, and cherry cola. With a crisp, indulgent, delicious flavor and medium-weight body, it ends with a perfect Pacific Rim rainforest finish. Married to a veterinarian, I am a lifelong animal lover myself. That is why this wine’s story caught my attention. And what I tasted was pure happiness in a bottle. The usual reaction I get from people who taste this smooth, red blend matches my own, “Mmm, that is good!”

Wine maker notes
Each year, Dunham Cellars blends a portion of its wines into this red table wine. Using fruit from some of Washington’s finest vineyards and using the same barrels in which our finest Cabernet, Merlots and Syrahs are aged, we are able to maintain the consistent high quality of our top wine, as well as create a great everyday wine that is price-friendly.

Dunham Cellars uses some of the finest grapes grown around the Walla Walla, Yakima and Columbia Valleys to produce award-winning wines that truly earn their fans’ high regard. Winemaker Eric Dunham has earned accolades from wine writers and publications such as Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator. This wine derives its unusual name from a very touching story. Dunham rescued a badly injured puppy, carefully nursing it back to health. Although the pup, named Port, had lost a leg, he grew up to be healthy and active and soon became Dunham’s loyal companion. With Port as his vineyard dog, the two made wine together for many years.

Food pairing
This wine pairs well with many types of foods. I’ve enjoyed it with spaghetti Bolognese, hearty vegetable stew and even takeout pizza. But for me, the perfect pairing for Dunham’s Three-Legged Red is homemade blue cheese burgers. Pair good wine with such a common comfort food, you may ask? Yes, indeed! If you like blue cheese, you'll never forget how well Three-Legged Red works with these grilled delights. Any recipe will do, but I’m a fan of the super easy Blue Cheese Burger on simplyrecipes.com. But whatever you serve it with, the main point is to enjoy this wine and know it came from a very good place.
