Review
I have always been a huge fan of street art, from graffiti to stencil to mixed media. I love walking around the city and finding an art piece or an installation that immediately gets my attention and stirs up my creativity. In the spring of 2011, I had the idea of creating an exclusive wine label for 67 Wine. My objective was to make something unique, something that served as a bridge for my love of art and my work in the wine business. That’s when my colleague Sadie Flateman introduced me to legendary graffiti artist Cope2. With a career that spans three decades, he was the perfect artist to help my dream become a reality. What if we create a graffiti wine label? I asked him and Sadie while sipping espressos at Pulino’s on the Bowery. Cope was immediately onboard. While he got started on the label, I began searching for a winery to make our wine. I commissioned my great friend Antonio Santofimia of Aviva Vino to help, and he suggested Bodegas Luzón in Jumilla, Spain. The winery took on the challenge and ended up making a wine that was as bold and expressive as the label.

La Caldera 67 Limited Edition Cuvée is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell. This bold and seamless wine is specially blended and aged resulting in great flavors that combine both elegance and intensity. Tempranillo balances and softens the blend, Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and body and Monastrell provides nuances of spices and aromatics. This is a wine that is as intriguing and striking as the label on the bottle.

Technical notes
The Grapes for this Blend were specially selected and were hand harvested from Bodegas Luzon Finca Castillo de Luzon. Monastrell vineyards have 60 years of age, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo between 15-25 years old, located 600 meters altitude. The fermentation took place in small tanks after 2-3 days of maceration. Finally the wine is aged for 12 months in new French and American barrels.

Food pairing
Don’t be shy when coming up with foods to serve with this wine! Think beef tenderloin with a port sauce, coq au vin, pan-roasted lamb chops with rosemary and butter and—my favorite—pernil, a slow roasted pork shoulder marinated in an authentic Cuban mojo sauce composed of lime juice, garlic purée, olive oil, salt and pepper.
