"…By contrast, the 2011 Paillieres was partly destemmed and had a higher percentage of grenache, 90 percent, along with 5 percent mourvedre and 5 percent clairette blanche, a white grape. Why a white grape? Kermit Lynch, the American wine importer, who is part owner of Pallieres along with the Brunier family of famed Chateauneuf estate Vieux Telegraphe, told me it has always been grown at Pallieres and may be part of what distinguishes it from other Gigondas. The 2011 Gigondas Terrasse du Diable (85% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre and a touch of Clairette) comes from the high altitude parcels of the complicated and morsellated estate of Les Pallieres. It reveals sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit intermixed with a liqueur of crushed rocks, spring flowers, bay leaf and lavender. This complex, concentrated, medium to full-bodied Gigondas should drink well for 10-15 years.
