Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux 2011

Awine that develops beautifully in the glass, the 2011 Echezeaux shows all of the softness and sensuality that makes so many wines in this vintage appealing young. Dried red cherries, crushed flowers, mint and licorice meld together nicely in a supple, expressive Burgundy. Slightly green notes come through from time to time, but they are nicely balanced by the depth of the fruit.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Echezeaux 2011 has a well-defined bouquet with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, and just a slight charred tincture (and it is really only a tincture) in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with quite light tannins for a grand cru, but the fruit is detailed with raspberry, blackberry and cranberry segueing into quite a tertiary finish. This improves with aeration attaining more delineation as it opens.

A vibrant, mineral- and spice-tinged version, showing a core of red berry. Firm and linear, with a dense, compact finish. Stays long, revealing an oaky aftertaste. Best from 2017 through 2027.óB.S.

Wine maker notes
Elegant and sumptuous. Often has scents of violet and spices. Matures earlier than our other grand crus. In its youth it is fragrant and silky becoming deep and full when it matures. A round wine which is rarely very tannic. May be kept 8 to 10 years. Our favourite wine at home when we are having pheasant or guineafowl.
