Pierre Gaillard Saint Joseph Rouge 2012

Sku: P59142

Inky, dark red, almost purple center, with no fade at edge.,
Black fruit, black olive, green olive, anchovy, saline, black pepper, smoke on nose, intense.,
Powerful flavors of black & green olive, black fruit, big black pepper notes.,
Extremely long, black pepper finish - lingers on and on and on.,
Stunning, exceptional, big, powerful, delicious, expressive.,

90 points, Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Bright ruby. Red berries, cracked pepper, olive and violet on the perfumed nose and palate. Silky and appealingly sweet, with a fine-grained texture that reminded me of pinot noir. Shows no rough edges and finishes clean, nervy and long, with a subtle floral quality lingering. This is already drinking well.

Gaillard's Saint-Joseph comes from vineyards located in the communes of Chavanay, Malleval and Limony. The soils here have plenty of granite, producing well-structured, vibrant wines. The individual vineyard parcels are kept separate and are mostly destemmed before crushing. Each parcel is then vinified separately "to bring out its own individuality", to quote Gaillard, and to allow more options when assembling the wine. The final wine is then aged in Allier and Nevers barrels, only 20 per cent new, for 18-20 months. Bottled unfiltered, this is a detailed and fragrant 100 per cent Syrah that delivers a wine with deep, spice-tinged, wild berry fruit and a sleek texture. There are just enough integrated, fine tannins and a long, bright finish. A lot of freshness and finesse here. Fans of this cuvée are once again in luck.
