|Beaujolais is a gateway to Burgundy and for the already-Burgundy-lover, a good Cru Beaujolais is a casual allusion - in price and taste - to Burgundy's charms.
Franck Besson's Le Clos du Fief Julienas delivers much more than an average gamay. It is about purity and earthiness. Deep and lovely earthy aromas combine with red currant and dark berries on the palate. Medium bodied with impressive structure and plumpness. It's characterful earthy minerality (flowers and funck), revealing fruit, and soft texture make this a wine of total pleasure. For me, an irresistible wine of the season that is excellent for heartier fall menus, like root vegetable gratin and filet mignon.
Les Clos du Fief is the top cuvee of the Besson estate. A high altitude site planted with old-vine gamay (nearly 100 years old) near the commune of Jullie - which takes its name from Julius Caeser, as its vines were planted during the Gallo-Roman period. The granitic based soils afford a more robust and fragrant wine. The grapes used to make this wine were hand harvested. Elevage in neutral oak barrels for one year to soften the tannin. The wine is drinking well now but I expect it to develop over the next five years.
Domaine Franck Besson Estate is in the process of obtaining Organic certification.
