The 2007 Reserva “Old Vines” was very fine the first time I saw it, a terrific early release from this long awaited joint venture by two Portuguese winemaking icons, Joao Portugal Ramos (of the eponymous winery in Alentejo) and Jose Soares Franco (who made Portugal’s Barca Velha for many years). The next time I saw it, with one of the partners, the tannins seemed to have fallen off and the wine seemed one dimensional. Revisiting it again in Douro in the summer of 2011 as part of a vertical with the winemaker, it was again the wine I first remembered, vibrant, beautifully balanced and harmonious, with a real backbone but good fruit as well. It was lovely. What explains the bottle variation? The only explanation anyone could provide was - perhaps an off bottle. In any event, note the resurrection. Drink now-2019.
