Sku: 1659168

Lead Time 5 day lead-time required Why?

Gabarinza, meaning ”cleared forest,” is often cited as one of Austria”s greatest red wine vineyards. This historic cru is perched along a promontory of magnesium-rich sandy loam with an ideal exposition facing Lake Neusidl. Gernot Heinrich”s parcel is planted to 60% Zweigelt, 30% Blaufrankisch and 10% Merlot and results in a multi-layered wine of equal density and subtlety.

Tasting notes
Deep, dark ruby-garnet hue with violet reflections. Aromas of fine nougat and blackberry fruit supported by delicate spices, soft orange notes and complex wood tones. The palate shows body, opulent, ripe berry fruit, perfectly integrated tannins, fine notes of dried fruits in the finish and a lingering fresh fruit expression. Excellent length. A Superb multidimensional food companion with enormous charm.

Other text
Early vintages were powerful and boldly tannic, aged primarily in new barriques, however, over the past decade the intensity of vineyard work has become more critical to the development of the wines. Hence, use of new barrels in the cellar has become modest. The new, ultra-modern winery, completed in 2002, provides the freedom of space and the tools to ensure that the fruit is translated into wines that are powerful, yet without hard edges - complex, yet delicate. The winery is dedicated to promoting elite examples of classic varietals from the area like Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufrankisch. As each year passes, the red wines of Austria become more refined and the winemakers more adept. These may still be foreign sounding to the US market; however, it is clear the quality of the wines produced here will need no special translation to be appreciated.

Food pairing
Pair with mushroom-crusted lamb chops, grilled pork with sundried tomatoes, or chicken cacciatore.
