..." Speaking of turning out nicer, the Rossignol 2017s have turned out better than I expected. Whenever that occurs, especially when some of them turned out considerably better, I always wonder whether it was simply a poor showing that day for the wines (it happens occasionally) or whether it was me not tasting as keenly as I usually do. Either way, I'm happy to report that many of the Rossignol 2017s that I retasted are recommended. Rossignol noted that they were bottled in January and February 2020. Part of the fifth generation of the renowned Rossignol family, winemakers in Burgundy for centuries, Nicolas Rossignol started his own domaine in 1997 and never looked back.
Nicolas holds to the belief that the future of wines lies in innovation, rather than sticking to the rules of the past. He actively enterprises to make rich, elegant wines that fight people's preconceptions of what each region in Burgundy can produce, from delicate Pommards grown in clay-based soils to big, bold and punchy Volnays.
His innovation extends to his techniques. His approach is highly influenced by biodynamics, and he manages vineyards with minimal intervention, paying heed to the lunar cycle in everything he does. For 2016, Nicolas built a state-of-the-art winery just on the outskirts of Beaune. The estate is about 17ha today.

Wine Advocate 88 points The 2017 Volnay Village exhibits aromas of spicy blackcurrants and dried flowers, followed by a medium-bodied, deep and tight-knit palate, with promising depth but chalky structuring tannin which will need some time. If the slight asperity it displayed from barrel has resolved by the time it's bottled, my score will look conservative. — William Kelley
2017’s "they exemplify his fleshy but precise style and will provide immense pleasure for a broad period. With a new and luxuriously appointed winery and cellar on the Beaune périphérique and an enviable palette of appellations, the future looks very bright for Nicolas Rossignol, a winemaker who today numbers among the Côte de Beaune's best producers.”  William KelleyBurghound 88 points

The red and dark pinot fruit aromas are laced with plenty of earth and floral wisps. The energetic middle weight flavors possess fine precision and only a hint of rusticity on the dusty if mildly edgy backend. This relatively forward effort may better harmonize with a few years of bottle age.

Vinous A blend of five different vineyards, one at the top of the hill representing 60% of the blend, the totally de-stemmed 2017 Volnay Village has an expressive, quintessential Volnay bouquet of pure black cherries and blueberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers fleshy red berry fruit laced with sage and white pepper; hints of clove pop up toward the finish. One of Rossignol’s more approachable cuvées. Very fine -- Neal Martin
