Walter Scott was founded in 2008 by Erica Landon and her husband Ken Pahlow. Their first vintage was produced in 2009 out of Patricia Green Cellars, then at Evening Land, where Ken worked alongside Dominique Lafon. This clearly had an influence on the wines of Walter Scott, where they began producing Chardonnay in 2011. The next year they moved to their current winery space, which is located in front of the Justice Vineyard of the Eola-Amity Hills. They continue to raise the bar across their portfolio and are producing exceptional wines with purity and balance...These are no-question Burgundian-inspired wines, with a reductive style, though for my taste, they are some of the best wines pushing the bar higher and higher in the Eola-Amity Hills. - Audrey Frick

Eric Guido writes:  A burst of savory reduction slowly blows off the 2022 Chardonnay La Combe Verte to reveal a deeply seductive blend of wildflowers and sage, giving way to nectarines and candied ginger. This is surprisingly weighty in feel, communicating a level of prominence balanced by a core of juicy acidity. Flinty minerality adds depth to its core of ripe pears and green melon. The 2022 leaves a pretty inner sweetness while cleaning up remarkably well with traces of candied lime that linger. The La Combe Verte punches well above its price.  Drinking 2024 - 2027  - Vinous 92

Clive Pursehouse writes:  La Combe Verte Chardonnay offers a laser-focused minerality, smoky flint, grilled pineapple, and ocean breeze salinity. The palate is a melange of tangy citrus and concentrated fruits—flavours of grilled lemon peel, petrichor, zingy lime pith, and passionfruit.  Drinking 2024 - 2031  - Decanter 94

Erin Brooks writes:  Fruit for the 2022 Chardonnay La Combe Verte comes from five premier vineyards in the Willamette Valley planted on both volcanic and marine sedimentary soils: Freedom Hill, Hyland, Koosah, Sojeau and Witness Tree. It was blended with 2% Aligoté and matured for eight months in 25% new French oak before finishing with two months in stainless steel. It offers integrated tones of matchstick and flint that complement a core of quince paste, peach preserves, meringue, beeswax and cashews. The light-bodied palate is seamless and shimmery, pairing concentrated, honeyed fruit with linear acidity that results in a weightless feel and an ethereal finish.  Drinking 2025 - 2035  - Robert Parker Wine Advocate 93

Producer notes: We believe in Willamette Valley Chardonnay. This classic variety has an important place in our region and at Walter Scott, not in the replication of other inspirational regions, but in its own distinctive style, with its own compelling voice. Chardonnay is a grape which has the ability to translate our unique geology in the same way Pinot noir does. Through thoughtful farming and cellar practices, we strive to allow Chardonnay to reach its powerful Willamette Valley potential.

Our approach to Chardonnay pays attention to texture and structure, translating site and vintage. The La Combe Verte 2022 is fermented with 100% ambient yeast and full malolactic conversion in French oak barrels with very little bâtonnage. The wine is lightly filtered prior to bottling to brighten aromatics and give us a polished finish. The result is an illuminating style of Chardonnay, showcasing density and precision. The palate spotlights evolving layers of textures which follow the classic aromatic notes of lemon zest, honeycrisp apple and white flowers, with the finish offering a subtle mineral and saline character.

2021 Vintage
Erin Brooks writes: The 2021 Chardonnay La Combe Verte opens from matchstick to intense peach perfume and nuances of beeswax, almonds and acacia. The medium-bodied palate explodes with layer after layer of powerful fruit, delivered in a luxuriously silky texture and tempered by focused acidity. The Combe Verte offers fantastic length, concentration and energy! - Robert Parker Wine Advocate 96

Anna Lee C. Iijima writes: Abundant in tangy, sun-struck citrus and green plum flavours, La Combe Verte is the bright-fruited, eager-to-please younger sibling to this producer's more reserved Cuvée Anne. Augmented with 2% Aligoté and fermented in French oak (but just 20% new) via ambient yeast, it's a lively, crystalline wine with a zingy lime pith finish. - Decanter 93
